Letterpress is a relief printing process, the text or image is raised like a rubber stamp.
Ink is applied to the surface and pressed directly on to the paper resulting in the transfer of an inked image on to the paper surface. The final printed product is a beautifully printed, tactile 3D like finish unique to letterpress.
Letterpress dates back to as early as 750AD when the Chinese invented printing using wooden blocks to produce print.
In 1457 Gutenberg invented movable type and thus the first printing press was invented.
Today we combine digital technology with traditional methods. Designs are created by a skilled graphic designer and photopolymer plates are produced from a digital file. These are then mounted on to a base ready for printing. Combining the two technologies allows for endless creativity.
Foiling is also a form of letterpress printing. The difference is the use of coloured foil instead of ink to transfer the pigment by applying heat.
Blind deboss is where the image [design] is pressed deep into the card without using ink which creates a relief.
We prefer doing this by using a small amount of transparent ink which has just a hint of colour added to it which then gives a hint of highlight of the debossed image ( pressed in )
Please note blind deboss is counted as a second colour pass, hence the price band will be the same as a two colour print.
Can I choose my own ink colour/colours instead of your house colours?
Yes you can, if you have a pantone colour/colours in mind we can mix them or if you have a special colour you would like to match, please send us a swatch and we will endeavour to match it as close as possible.
Additional charges will apply for special colour mixing and matching.
When viewing on screen, colours can vary considerably according to the device used. Because of this we have produced our unique colour swatch, lovingly letterpress printed with our house colours. Our swatch book will show ink colours more accurately than on a screen.
Please note when viewing colours from the swatch different lighting conditions will alter the shade of the colour you are viewing.
Colour can vary slightly when printed on different types of paper. Inks are transparent in their property so dry by absorption and oxidation on the paper which can result in slight variation in colour.
We always endeavour to match the colours in our swatch as closely as possible but cannot give 100% guarantee, due to the paper stock and nature of letterpress using vintage printing presses.
This is unlike modern presses that are controlled by computers; this is why letterpress is unique and authentic.
